Surprise: Sneak Peek to the new animals cage!

So I shall now announce that I am adopting a new animal, but am not going to say which animal just yet! Here is a sneak peek on the cage that we are building him (oh yeah I guess I just told you that this animal is a boy :O )

Here's some hints!

-The cage is pretty large as these animal species needs lots of room!
-This animal need lots of playtime outside of the cage
-The animal I am adopting has only 3 legs due to an accident

Which animal do you think I am adopting? Find out in a future post!

Tip time: did you know that most animals with three legs adapt to it and go on with their life perfectly fine? Some can even run as fast as it's own with four legs!!

Reviews: 20 gallon long aquarium for hamsters!

My hamster Lucille lives in a 20 gallon *long* aquarium tank. A 20 gallon aquarium is the exact minimum size for ANY hamster species. It measures to just exactly 360 square inches of floor space which is the US minimum hamster cage size. Here is a picture:

(Sorry for the glare, the lighting wasn't very good!)

My opinion?

It meets the minimum so it is good for a hamster but not the greatest, as bigger is better but for me that is all I can afford for now. I hope in the future to upgrade her to a 40 gallon breeder tank or a bin cage like Dumplings. I have nothing against the 20 gal, I would just prefer to have her live in a larger cage! Definitely if that is all you can afford and have space for go for it. Make sure though you purchase the 20 gallon LONG and not TALL as hamsters need running space preferably than height/levels.

Tip time!

Did you know that in different places in the world minimum hamster cage sizes vary? Germany having the largest and most amazing cage size!

Below are pictures of what the bag looks like!

As you can see NOW cat food is grain free which is great as grain is just a filler in most cat foods. The flavour is turkey, salmon, and duck! Yummmmmm haha XD

NOW by petcurrean is also made in Canada:

I hope this review was helpful and helps you choose a healthy food for your feline friends :)

Hamster Care Series #2: Bedding

I want you to think first about what you would like to walk on bare footed all day, and all night. Most likely something softer or smooth. Many hamsters are forced to live on wired floors (which is awful considering it causes Bumble foot) So please make sure your hamsters are NOT on a wire floor!

Now for the bedding.

Most common bedding used is cedar and pine shavings or commonly known as softwood shavings. These types of shavings are life threatening to any small animal and should NEVER be used. They contain a harmful chemical that gives rabbits liver problems, and hamsters are highly allergic. It also causes many other harmful problems to your Animal.

Another harmful bedding is scented bedding. You wouldn't want to live in a room packed with a strong perfume everyday, and you would probably sneeze all day, so please don't do that to your hamster and avoid ANY bedding a labelled scented.

Good choices are:

- Carefresh (colours, natural, or the plain white)
- Living world paper based bedding
- Aspen (hardwood)
- any Carefresh off-brand
- Paper based bedding
- DIY bedding
- National geographic bedding

Please do what is best for the hamster. This is what your furry friend will sleep in and walk on all night.

Tip Time: Did you know that cotton fluff bedding is extremely harmful to any small animal. It does not break down in their bodies and gets trapped in their throat and cheek pouches causing suffocation. Please use toilet paper as a much safer option!

Bin cage tutorial!

So as promised here is Dumplings Bin cage tutorial!

Here is an overview

Step 1: Purchase a bin (with a lid if you own cats or dogs) from places such as target, walmart, lowes, ikea, mine is from target. Also purchase some nails and a long strip of wood + chicken wire

Step 2: with a sharpie mark where you want the wholes to be (I have a big square hole on the top lid, and a small square hole on the side to give the hamster plenty of air.

Step 3: Using an exacto knife carefully (if you are a kid have parent help!) saw through the plastic to create the holes.

Step four: Cut the wood to size and create a frame to fit around the whole. Nail together and then staple on chicken wire to the frame like this......

And nail into the plastic bin with a screw driver

Step 5: Wipe down bin with a cloth and mild dish soap. Fill with safe bedding and toys and you have just made a bin cage!

Tip Time! Did you know that bin cages are great if you cannot afford an aquarium! They also offer plenty of floor space. Mine has 465 square inches of floor space! Dumpling loves it :)

My hamsters diet

Hello everyone!

I thought I would tell you all my hamsters secret recipe shhhhhhh (it's okay it's no secret XD )

Hamsters just like humans and all other animals need a good healthy diet that provides them with everything needed. Many people don't know this and purchase their hamsters bad seed mixes so I am here to tell you some good ones!

Great choices include:

- Hazel Hamster
- Carefresh Complete Menu
- Oxbow pellets (note they should only be mixed with other mixes)
- VitaKraft VitaSmart
- Cellu-green living world pellets

There are more but these are my favourites!

Dumpling and Lucille's daily food recipe:

1 tbsp Carefresh Complete Menu
1 tbsp VitaKraft VitaSmart
1/2 tsp Flax seeds
F.G. Oats
1 tsp Raw shelled sunflower seeds
1 tsp Oxbow Pellets (about 5-6)

Note: the flax and oats are just add ins and you do not have to put them in but they are very nutritious

Next I just mix them all together in their bowls and there you go :)

- I usually change the food every few days to give new food as they love it!

** Russian Campbell's dwarves and hybrids are very prone to diabetes so it is good to take out the peas and corn in the food mixes **

Thank you, and I hope this was helpful!!

Hamster care series #1: Housing

Question: What size cage does my hamster need?

Common Answer: Any cage from a local pets store will do!

 X WRONG X

Hamsters in the wild cover miles and miles of land every single night. Most pet store cages provide very little space and doesn't give any hamster the opportunity to move comfortably. The US minimum cage size for ANY hamster species (many people think because dwarf hamsters are small they can have a smaller cage) is 360 square inches of floor space! Anything less than that size is not suitable for a hamster.

Bad cage choices include:

- Any critter trail brand cage
- any pet store cage
- any aquariums under 20 gallons long
- cages labelled as travel sized cages

Good choices for cages include:

- 20 gallon long aquariums
- Any bin cage 105 qt or more (tutorial for a bin cage posted in the future :D )
- DIY cages that are 360 square inches or more
- Ikea Detolfs
- Christmas tree bin
- Ikea lacks
- Any aquarium above 360 square inches (ex. 40 gal breeder, 55 gal, etc.)

Please do what is best for your little critter and house it in an appropriate cage size to ensure a long, healthy life.

Tip time!

Did you know that a common answer to the question : why is my hamster chewing the cage bars? Is your cage is most likely to small and it is time for an upgrade!
